The lion statue in Place Denfert Rochereau is the work of Gustave Bartholdi. It commemorates the defense of the city by the troops of Colonel Denfert-Rochereau during the Franco-German war of 1870. It has been located in the center of the square of the same name since 1880. The statue is positioned so that the lion is watching eastwards towards the Grenelle bridge, towards the Statue of Liberty, also sculpted by Barthodi.
